A family of Wrens or as we like to call them “bitch birds” (back when we didn’t know what they were), moved into our little birdhouse we nailed to a dead tree stump back between our vegetable garden and our new little “park” area that Mike cleared out and mulched this past week. The babes have hatched and if you go back near there and keep quiet, you can here the peep peep peeping of little wrens inside as the mama and daddy wrens fervently fly back and forth, relentlessly supplying their brood with bugs.
Last weekend we were both working back there and had to run in and do a little work then dash out to let the toiling wren parents feed their young. At first we would run in, dump a load of mulch, spread it quickly and the birds would sit a good 10 feet away on the fence and flutter their wings and bitch bitch bitch that wren-like noise that only an upset wren can make until we left the area. By the end of the day, they got bolder and bolder, sitting right on the birdhouse 2 feet or less from where we were working, valiantly defending their nests from the marauding giants.
I said to Mike, “I wonder how they think they can win out over us if we did indeed decide that we wanted baby wren for dinner”. No sooner did I say that than Mike got dive bombed, just a warning dive for now but I suppose those tiny creatures could put quite a little gash in the head of a giant human if they had a mind to do it. They are tiny but the mightiest nest defenders I have ever seen.

Funny! I was just attacked by a black bird recently. I was riding my bike and it pecked at my helmet!
