I’ve mentioned before in past posts that my husband, Mike does not like ethnic food. He just can’t handle most herb and spice flavors so I really don’t get to go places with him unless I know he can get a burger or a taco. My daughter, Michelle, however will try anything and everything, so she is the person I go on my culinary adventures with. Since she lives in Elk Grove and only has Sunday and Mondays off and I work 12 hour days in Addison, it’s hard to hook up with her to check out something different. I have been wanting to try Akina’s since I first heard of it. This week, thanks to a weeks vacation, I got my chance.
Michelle drove out from Elk Grove and we are all ready to have her show me around the many dishes one might find in a Thai restaurant. Imagine our dismay to find it permanently closed.
We went to Bangkok House instead and had a great meal there for a very reasonable price and I will go back again as Mike likes Chinese food. I have now found that I like Thai food, particularly anything cooked with a red curry sauce and coconut milk.
The demise of Akina’s worries me though. There was a note on the door that said that one could email them if they wanted to be notified if they found a new location….so I am surmising that the reason they are no longer in business is the location. There really is not enough parking on Grove street where it was.
I realize that the construction mess we find downtown is needed before the area can be fully revitalized but I am concerned about these pioneering businesses. I try myself to support as many as possible but we are only 2 people and don’t have the budget to dine out often.
Does the city of Elgin do any advertising in the surrounding areas? Do people from Hoffman Estates and beyond know what a nice time they can have coming to Elgin for lunch or dinner? Will the businesses that are there survive until enough is there to make people consider it a destination? I salute the pioneers who with great faith in our fair city, put forth the money and effort to build their dream in Elgin. I implore anyone reading this blog to eat and shop locally and help them along.

Do you by chance know Akina’s email address?
Thanks,

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for your comment and for reading Lovin Elgin. I do not have an email address for Akinas. I think their might have been one on the note taped to the door of where their restaurant had been but I did not have a pen and paper on me at the time.
I’m thinking that if you go to the downtown neighborhood association website and email someone there, they may have an email address for the former owners. I sure hope they can open someday again in the future.
